There are some albums that make me want to quit songwriting cus they are just so damn good. The build, the melodies, the twinkly guitars, the gang vocals, the arrangement, the large line-up working so well together. Umpf.
These vocals though, particularly the jumping melody on “let it end all suffering”:

We played a show at Vassar last night and afterwards saw this guy at someone’s apartment. The atmosphere of the room reminded me of the shows that really inspired me to play folk music. Small, intimate, and transportive shows where community is created by the performer. I’d be happy playing shows like that for the rest of my life.

This song was one of the highlights of his set.

Joe showed me this album and I really fell in love with it quickly. They have some great pulsing beats and nice melodies. Plus any folk group that lists Los Campesinos! as an influence is fine with me.

Too many scenes get way too exclusive way too easily. On the surface it can seem like a great community with lots of camaraderie but as soon as someone crosses a line, breaks a rule of appearance, or simply tries to get their foot in the door, true colors show.

I always felt this way whenever I tried to identify myself as a punk and have unfortunately found it true of other genres/scenes/towns as well. “You’re not punk and I’m telling everyone”. I just wanna play and listen to some music, take your elitism somewhere else. Sometimes I can’t even go to a show without feeling like I have to put up a wall against the selective vibe.

These old boys clubs are no different than high school. Which ironically, a lot of musicians try to escape through forming scenes. It’s like an Orwellian novel.

Gotta keep reminding myself to push through that bullshit and just keep putting myself out there.
